This information from the weather station at Park Headquarters was compiled and sent to us by John Peterson.

 

 A total of  4.25 inches of rain fell between July 21 to Sept 7, over a 7 week period.  Average annual rainfall for Borrego Springs, according to National Weather Service statistics is 6.18 inches

 

Rainfall dates and amounts were:

 July 21 (1.97 inches)

July 22  (.04 inches)

August 25 (1.18 inches)

August 26 (.67 inches),

August 30 (.16 inches)

Sept 6 (.16 inches)

September 7 (.07 inches)  

TOTAL RAINFALL DURING THIS PERIOD  4.25 inches

It should be also noted that monsoonal rainfall can vary widely over very short distances.  One part of the Borrego Valley can receive torrential rain while the other side of town gets little or none. 

 

Also, desert rainfall during the summer monsoon season can be very heavy in a very short period of time.  Mecca , California received over five inches of rain on September 11, 2012, most of that falling within a one hour period.
