Borrego Rock and Gem Club
Meeting Minutes, 28 March 2009
1. We have 5 new members – WELCOME!
2. CFMS rates have been raised. Club dues will go up next year to $16 (from current $15).
3. A coated canvas banner with our name on it was purchased by Bob Veborg. The banner will be very useful for identifying our group when we participate in activities such as the swap meet. Reimbursement of $35 to Bob was approved.
4. Bob V. is working on arrangements for a tour of the Gypsum Mine. This trip would be a weekday trip, since the mine is not accessible for tours on weekends.
5. The group discussed modifying our standard meeting/field trip schedule. The preferred change was to reverse the timing of the two meetings. A motion was made that the club have the monthly meeting on the second Saturday of the month and the field trip on the last Saturday of the month. The motion was unanimously approved. This change is effective immediately.
6. Future field trips were discussed. Possibilities are the Himalaya Tourmaline mine (fee dig), Pebble Terrace, Garnet Wash, Wonderstone Quarry, and the Right Fender Ranch. The group agreed that there is no reason that we cannot have more than one field trip per month if the opportunity arises.
7. Jimmy Smith from the Paleo group at the State Park gave a presentation about thin-sectioning of rocks. The presentation was very informative and included viewing thin-sections through a microscope.
8. A bonus field trip is scheduled for Saturday April 18th. The trip will include Garnet Wash and the Wonderstone Quarry. Meet at the Nature Center at 8 AM if you wish to participate. The drive into the Quarry requires 4WD/high clearance – carpooling is available for those who need a ride.
9. The next meeting is Saturday, April 14th at 10:00 AM at the Nature Center.
Feel free to bring any goodies for show and tell. On the agenda is a presentation
by Cindy MacLeish on jewelry making and discussion of the location for the
April 28th field trip.
