Carole
Ziegler is on the faculty of Southwestern Community College in Chula Vista.
An avid cyclist and hiker, she has cycled County Road S-2 from near Warner
Springs to Ocotillo at least four times. She is also on the 68th mile of hiking
the Pacific Crest Trail, having started at the Mexican border and doing northbound
day hikes of about 10 miles each. She figures to reach Canada by her 100th
birthday. She just turned 60.
She has taught geology, environmental geology, geography and oceanography at San Diego universities since 1987. She is managing editor for Geology and History of Southeastern San Diego County, California, a compilation (about to go to press) of two years of field trips by the San Diego Association of Geologists featuring road logs of the area below Agua Caliente with information on the Campo Railroad Museum, Desert Tower and the Campo feldspar mill, and the geology of areas around Domelands, Volcanic Hills, Canyon Sin Nombre, Jacumba, and Dos Cabezas. The guidebook also includes local Indian information.
She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Mundelein College Chicago, and an M.S. in Geochemistry from George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Ziegler is the mother of a 28 year old daughter who is a marine biologist specializing in sharks and a 25 year old son who is an electrical engineer specializing in LASIK and cataract surgery instruments. Her husband of 35 years is Director of the General Clinical Research Center at the UCSD Medical Center.
The program she plans to present was developed for ranger talks at various San Diego County parks.
