Birds of Anza-Borrego, a weekend birding course in the Borrego Desert
Instructor: Kurt Leuschner, Professor
of Natural Sciences.
Participants of all birding abilities are welcome – also a great course for general desert natural history and for teachers! Caravan to various sites in the Borrego Desert. Learn about the ecology, conservation, and taxonomy of many different bird species. Weather can be variable.
To enroll, call the UC Riverside Extension, 800/422-4900; or email. Course fee is $169 or $155 each for couples and family members (subject to price increase fall 2009). Includes 1.5 quarter units. ABDNHA members receive a discount!

Writing Workshop with Children’s Author Byrd Baylor
Byrd Baylor, Caldecott Honor award-winning author of Desert Voices, Everybody Needs a Rock, The Table Where Rich People Sit, guides you in writing techniques based on your life and place. Sponsored by the Friends of the Borrego Springs Library and ABDNHA.

First Annual San Diego County Literary Conference
Reading, Discussion, and Reception with Byrd Baylor
Award-winning author Byrd Baylor will read and discuss her books beginning at 1 p.m. Byrd has written more than 25 books relating to her passion for the desert southwest, its landforms, and its plants and animals and people, and always its power, including The Desert Is Theirs and The Other Way to Listen.
Her books have become classics for children, parents, and teachers.

A book signing/reception follows from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Books will be available for purchase at the reception.

All are invited to attend the Official Dark Sky Community Presentation to Borrego Springs by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). Speakers include Kim Patten of the IDA; San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn; and Scott Kardel of Palomar Observatory.
Ceremony begins at the Borrego Springs County Library, east end of The Mall. Reception follows.
