When the Anza expeditions made their arduous journeys from Sonora to California, they crossed the Colorado River near Yuma and went southwest into what is now Mexico, entering California around the west side of Mount Signal. In their search for water, the party was led to a well by a pair of Kumeyaay.

Leaving the Yuha Basin, they headed north, through or near what is now Plaster City in the general direction of BLM Road 085 to San Sebastian Marsh south of Highway 78.
