ANZA-BORREGO SOUTH : ROADS   Army Stagecoach Road

The first pathways across the Jacumba Mountains were Indian routes such as the one from Carrizo Gorge to Mountain Springs. When California became a United States territory, the Army garrison at San Diego used this route.

Today it makes for a nice hike or drive (4WD), if a little steep on the east end. The views of the desert are lovely.

The Army-Stagecoach road goes east to the steep drop to the Peter Larkin stagecoach station at Mountain Springs at the edge of the mountains. A longer and easier loop northward loop trail can also be taken. It is also possible to find westward trails.
