Goat Canyon Trestle
In the photo above, above the trestle is a structure with a slanted roof. It is actually a tunnel of the San Diego & Arizona Railway that collapsed in 1932. In the following year, the railroad erected the tall trestle over Goat Canyon to take its place. It is 185 feet tall and curved.
Goat Canyon Trestle can be hiked from Indian Hill. It is possible, but difficult, to continue up Palm Canyon Wash past the Mortero Palms and over the mountain ridge to where you can look down on the SDA Railway's trestle over Goat Canyon. This should be undertaken only by hikers with desert mountain experiece, preferably with a knowledge of these mountains. Plenty of water, the Jacumba topo map, and GPS advised. See Schad.
