Astragalus

Astragalus is a major Fabaceae genus with plants known by such common names as Milkvetch, Locoweed, and Rattleweed.

In Anza-Borrego, these plants are often seen in broad sandy washes such as Inspiration Wash. The Astragalus pictured above and below was seen beside Coyote Creek.

Some Astragalus plants are annuals, some perennials. Some are erect, some prostrate, as in the example shown above.

Botanists consider positive identification of the many Astragalus species, subspecies, and varieties to be difficult.

Family: Fabaceae.
