Coming across one of these sweet-smelling plants always feels like a cause for celebration. Going out and finding them destroyed by the weather is a cause for sorrow. The Spanish settlers called this plant ajo, which means garlic. They got the idea when they dug up one of the bulbs (not a good thing to do) and tasted it.
