Desert
Wild Flowers, Revised Edition (1941). Edmund C. Jaeger. 1941.
Stanford: Stanford University Press. 322 pages with index. ISBN 0-8047-0365-5.
$13.95 paper.
In 1915, Jaeger hitched up his pack burro and began the journey that would lead to the publication of Desert Wild Flowers.
Today this book is a 65-year-old wonder. Yes, it is no longer up-to-date as far as plant names are concerned, and yes, the black and white drawings and pitifully few photographs are hard to fathom.
But that isn’t why flower lovers turn to it. Search it for the array of information it provides on the origin of scientific and common plant names, and also for questions outside of botany such as Indian usage of plants and the identity of insects likely to be found on or near a given plant.
Think of it as a secondary and not a primary resource. To be in step with current plant names, you will want another source (Munz, Morhardt, Jepson) but none of these provides details quite like Jaeger does. The Morhardts are right to call it “extremely useful.”
