Katherine Siva Saubel grew up learning her native Cahuilla language, tribal songs, medicinal plant uses, and myths of long ago. With her husband she founded the first nonprofit tribal museum on an Indian reservation, the Malki Museum.

Today she works to preserve sacred sites and to protect Indian remains. As an expert on Indian culture she educates the California legislature and the United States Congress on issues of Native American culture, history and language. She has taught worldwide about her culture--at UCLA, CSU Hayward, UC Riverside, University of Cologne in Germany, and Hachinohe University in Japan. Her writings are published by government agencies, academic institutions and museums. She has received numerous awards for her work as an author, teacher, historian, and activist.

Saubel is also an ethnobotanist, and with Lowell John Bean has written a book that has become a classic in the field. Temalpakh (from the earth): Cahuilla Indian Knowledge and Uses of Plants covers more than 250 plants and how they were used by the Cahuilla in Southern California for food and beverages, for tools, sandals, fibers, dyes, baskets, and many other practical matters.
