Borrego
Beginnings: Early Days in the Borrego Valley, 1910-1960, by
Phil Brigandi.
ISBN 0-910805-04-0, 150 pages, b&w photos, paperback, $15.95.
In the early 1900s, the tiny isolated desert community of Borrego, connected to the outside world by a few winding dirt roads, was settled by homesteaders who struggled to grow dates, grapes, and alfalfa. Attracted by the annual wildflower bloom, a few tourists began to visit. By the 1950s, Borrego Springs had developed into a small desert resort with a branch library in the laundromat, a tiny airport, and a PGA-Pro-Am tournament.
Don't miss the companion volume, Old Time Cattlemen and Other Pioneers of the Anza-Borrego Area, by Lester Reed.
