Join Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association and geologist Don Barrie on a grand tour of Iceland’s natural wonders:  waterfalls, glaciers, icebergs, volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, lakes, beaches, birdlife, and more.   A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the ABDNHA.  Early registration discount is available. 

LAND COST = $2740 - includes lodging in a twin-shared room, private tour bus, many entries and activities, Professor Don Barrie as group leader, English-speaking GeoTours guide, some breakfasts.....

AIRFARE is additional, and costs approximately $700 round-trip from Los Angeles to Reykjavik.

Thu          7/11/19   Arrive Reykjavik, Iceland
Arrive Reykjavik mid-day, capital city of Iceland.  Visit Hallgrimskirkja church tower, with great views over Reykjavik, and take a short walking tour of Reykjavik.  Two nights in Laugarvatn.  

Fri            7/12/19   Golden Circle
See some of Iceland's top highlights:  Crater lake in Kerio volcano, Strokkur Geyser exploding every few minutes, Gullfoss waterfalls, and Pingvellir National Park where the North American plate is pulling apart from the Eurasian plate.  Option for a swim, soak, or sauna in Laugarvatn.   

Sat           7/13/19   Reykjavik to Vatnajokull
Visit the excellent Lava Center with high-tech exhibits of Iceland’s geology.  See 2 magnificent waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss (which you can walk behind) & thundering Skogafoss.  Stroll along a black sand beach at Reynisfjara, backed by volcanic cliffs.  Two nights near Vatnajokull National Park.  

Sun          7/14/19   Vatnajokull National Park
Full day in Vatnajokull National Park with great hiking opportunities to see glaciers and waterfalls.  In the afternoon see puffins and other birdlife at Ingolfshofdi Nature Reserve.  

Mon        7/15/19   Glacier Lagoons to Berunes
Marvel at Fjallsarlon and Jokulsarlon, lagoons with icebergs in front of massive glaciers.  One night in Berunes at a guesthouse on a fjord.  

Tue          7/16/19   Berunes to Myvatn
Hike to impressive Dettifoss, Europe’s largest waterfall.  Visit the beautiful fishing town of Husavik.  Two nights near Lake Myvatn.  

Wed        7/17/19   Lake Myvatn area
A day for geological wonders around Lake Myvatn:  Godafoss waterfall, hike through a volcanic landscape with lava towers and lava tubes,  Krafla volcano with a beautiful crater lake, and bubbling mud pits and fumaroles at Hverir.  Soak in the warm geothermal waters at Myvatn Nature Baths.  

Thu          7/18/19   Myvatn to Akureyri to Reykjavik
Visit Akureyri, Iceland’s 2nd largest city and a good place for souvenir shopping.  Continue to Reykjavik for one final night in Iceland.  

Fri            7/19/19   Blue Lagoon and Depart Iceland
Visit the Blue Lagoon to see Iceland’s most famous hot springs.  Option to soak in the aquamarine-colored geothermal waters.  Depart Reykjavik in the afternoon for the USA.

GENERAL INFORMATION – ABDNHA ICELAND TOUR 2019

Tour Dates

·          Depart Los Angeles, Wednesday, July 10, 2019

 Non-stop flight on Wow Airlines is 8.5  hours; lower fares might be available on other airlines with one connection

·          Arrive Reykjavik, Thursday, July 11, 2019

·          Depart Reykjavik, Friday, July 19, 2019

·          Arrive Los Angeles in the evening, Friday, July 19, 2019

 

Land Cost

·          $2740, including lodging, ground transport, many entries/activities, English-speaking guide, some breakfasts.

·          A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association.

·          Iceland is an expensive country.  This trip has some breakfasts included.  Restaurant meals are expensive ($15-40 for dinners).  Lunches (additional cost) will usually be simple (soup, sandwiches, burgers) at small cafes or markets.  We will sometimes stay at places with kitchen facilities where we can cook our own meals.

 

Airfare

·          Additional cost of approximately $700 for non-stop round-trip Los Angeles – Reykjavik – Los Angeles on Wow Airlines.  

 

Discounts

·          Early registration discount of $100 if you register with your $400 deposit before October  30, 2018. 

·          Early registration discount of $50 If you register with your $400 deposit between October 30 and November 30, 2018

·          Additional discount of $50 for members of ABDNHA registering for the tour before January 31, 2019. 

 

Registration Procedure

·          Registration begins on October 20, 2018  

·          Open to all ages; it is not necessary to be a member of Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association, but registration through October 31 is only open to ABDNHA members and their roommates.

·          CRegistration form will be posted online in the ABDNHA website on October 20.  Registration form will also be available at www.geotours.us 

·          Return the completed registration form with a $400 deposit to GeoTours LLC by US mail or online (instructions, payment options, and address are on the registration form).

 

Leader/Guide & Group Size

·          San Diego Mesa College geology professor Don Barrie will lead the group

·          GeoTours guide (Matt Ebiner) will accompany, direct, and guide the tour.

·          Group size will be a minimum 12 people, plus Professor Barrie, Guide Matt, and Icelandic driver.  Maximum size is 24 people. 

 

Accommodations

·          Price is based on sharing a room; if you don’t have a preferred roommate we will try match you with a roommate. 

·          Lodging is at hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and cabins, usually with a shared bathroom.  Accommodations are simple but always clean and usually in a beautiful location.   Single room supplement is +$600.

 

Transportation and Pace/Physical Effort

·          Private tour bus (38 seats) with English-speaking driver

·          This trip has a moderate pace and participants should be able to walk up to 4 miles on the longest day .

·          The average bus travel time is 3-4 hours per day, but a couple of days have 5-7 hours on the bus.

·          The weather is cool in June (average high usually in the 50sF) and light rain is likely about 3 days per week.
