The Borrego Botanical Garden
  • Old Man Cactus
  • Elephant Tree
  • Desert Willow
  • Organ Pipe Cactus and Joshua Tree
  • Palo Verde
  • Hummingbird and Fragrant Sage

Phase I construction of the Borrego Botanical Garden is now complete.  Phase 1 gives us an inviting entrance area, a palm oasis,  a dry wash bed, and an area that features the plants that were important to native people.  Stop by to see the magic that is being created.

But we are just getting started!  We still have a beautiful plaza area to creat, a relaxing space where residents and visitors can gather, spend some time, and enjoy the spirit of the desert.  There is a special bird and butterfly habitat in the plans as well as an area that will show the history of agriculture in the Borrego Valley, with all of the plants that made it happen, from the grapes that were planted here to the citrus and dates of today.

Stroll across a wooden bridge over a dry creek bed to enter a uniquely Borrego desert garden, artistically designed with creative plant placements and comfortable outdoor spaces.  Native plants such as creosote, brittlebush, ocotillo, jojoba and more dot the grounds. Trees such as palo verde, mesquite and palms provide shade and shelter for birds.

Follow a path past interpretive stories and identification labels. Some of the plantings and displays will showcase Kumeyaay and Cahuilla history and plant use. In one corner of the botanic garden you will find Borrego’s agricultural history, with representative crops and artifacts. Continuing along the path, you arrive at a small palm grove with a boulder-strewn pool to attract birds and wildlife. A special camera will be placed to identify nighttime animal visitors.

Will you be a part of this project?

The garden location is on land owned by the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association, just north of the ABDNHA building and parking lot.  The design makes use of palo verde trees and a smoketree already on the property.

The middle part of the garden will provide an outdoor space for educational programs and events. Boulders and benches offer seating for classes or quiet reflection.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPION AWARD
and the birth of
THE BORREGO BOTANICAL GARDEN PROJECT

In the fall of 2012 the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association was nominated as an "Eco Ambassador" in San Diego County for our online and hands-on program “Anza-Borrego Just for Kids.”

ABDNHA then competed with seven other organizations for a people’s choice award in which people voted on the website of CBS 8 San Diego for their favorite program.

ABDNHA won $10,000 in that contest and the ABDNHA board decided that those funds would be startup money for an eventual garden to be constructed on property owned by ABDNHA.
